17 Jan Are You Doing Things The Best They Can Be Done? A Few Thoughts From Our President, Jeff Russell
Last week, I wrote about not trying and just doing, along with working smarter, not harder. That message reminded me of one of my favorite quotes, which also reminded me that I have many favorite quotes!
So, here it is: “The path of mastering something is the combination of not only doing the best you can do at it, but also doing it the best it can be done.” – Gary Keller
Did that blow your mind!? It did mine! Maybe I am just off, but when I read that and let it sink in, my head felt like it was going to explode because it was a massive “ah-hah” moment!
Gary explains that people aren’t doing it the best it could be done because they aren’t willing to change the way they do things. That concept is very similar to Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity – “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” Gary also shares that to continue to improve ourselves, we must challenge ourselves.
I have personally experienced and accepted that there are many things that I cannot do the best that they can be done. One example is my landscaper, John, who I have trusted for the past 17 years in keeping my yard looking good. He can do that job way better than I could – no matter how hard I tried or how many hours I put in.
In the upcoming week, take inventory of professional and personal tasks you manage and try to figure out if there are any items on your list that someone else could do even better than you. For example, it may be that someone on your team is exceptional at a task that you are only so-so at. If that’s the case, delegate the task to them and let them do it the best it can be done!
A common roadblock to this exercise is ego. We often feel we have to be in charge of everything to feel competent. But think about this…if you delegate something out, you then have more time in your day to focus on the things that you can do the best they can be done! And at the end of it all, everyone wins!
I promise that you will have a better work-life balance and work smarter from this way of thinking.
Life is good. – Jeff
