28 Feb Getting What You Want: A Few Thoughts From Our President, Jeff Russell
I hear a lot of people talking about what they want. A new job, more money, a nicer car. The list goes on and on.
Some people even put together a dream board to visualize these things and get inspired. And that’s great. It can be a wonderful start to changing your story. But the real trick is the do part.
Once you know what you want, it’s time to do what you need to do to get it.
This can involve creating new emotional approaches and active behavioral changes to change your story or create a new story of potential and legacy.
This may all feel a little overwhelming, so start small and carry the momentum into the weeks, months, and years ahead.
So this week, decide on just one thing you want and one thing you can do to change your previous story and live your new one.
Here are a few examples:
I want: a new car.
I have to do: Create a budget and find out my current income and expenses to see how much money I can save (i.e., disposable income).
I want: a promotion.
I have to do: research the skills and experience that would be required to move into the position I desire.
This may seem like a tiny step in getting what you want, but if you go through this process over weeks and months, you will be acting on achieving your goal.
Bill Gates said it perfectly, “Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.”
So, take it step by step and be consistent over a year, and the results over ten years will be pretty significant!
Life is good. – Jeff
