Expressing Gratitude: A Few Thoughts From Our President, Jeff Russell

I was recently talking with a friend about different books and brainstorming new topics for my Monday message. She mentioned a book called Think Like a Monk by Jay Shetty that she really loved. So, of course, I jotted it down because it sounded like a great read. She also shared that Shetty had a podcast called “On Purpose” and that she had an ‘ah-hah’ moment during one of the episodes.

That moment was when Jay compared sharing the feeling of writing about gratitude and not expressing it to wrapping a gift and never giving it.

Whoa! Yep. Mind-blowing! Do you know how many gratitude journals I have given to people? How could this be!?

But his rationale behind the statement made so much sense. Yes, writing in a gratitude journal is great, but if you aren’t sharing those feelings with the other person, they will never know the impact they have made on you!

So, if you have a gratitude journal, that’s awesome. But sharing that gratitude with the person is where the magic is.

Go through your journal over the past year, and if you see someone’s name, send them a quick text (consider including a short video), give them a call, or send them a thank you note. It doesn’t have to be lengthy or complicated.

A simple, “Hey, mom, thanks for putting up with me for all these years.” Or a note to your spouse saying, “I appreciate you and all of your support this past week!” Short and sweet works just fine.

Thank you, Rach, for giving me more to write about! I am grateful for you in my life.

I know Valentine’s Day can be a Hallmark holiday, but it could also be the perfect time to be sure the people who matter most to you know it.

Life is good. – Jeff
